The birth of a child brings tremendous joy to the family. With the arrival of the newborn, the attention of the family shifts from the mother to the child. The mother herself, busy with the daily chores related to the rearing of the child, starts neglecting her health leading to a number of serious long-term health problems.
During pregnancy the body of a woman goes through a number of physiological and psychological changes. It is very important to address these changes postpartum, so that the mother quickly regains her health, fitness, and emotional strength.
“Pregnancy offers women time to value and nurture themselves.” says Jennifer Louden, author of The Pregnant Woman’s Comfort Book: A Self-Nurturing Guide to Your Emotional Well-Being During Pregnancy. “When you have a child, it’s hard to remember who you are. You need to have an established sense of self to keep you centered.”
Here are a few tips to help you take care of your health after pregnancy:
A Healthy Diet
After delivering the baby, it is time to think about your personal health. Make sure that you continue to include healthy and nutritious foods in your daily diet post-pregnancy, just like you did during pregnancy. Add chicken, eggs, fish, lots of fruits and green vegetables to your daily diet.
After pregnancy, a woman’s body needs lots of calcium so it is best to include calcium rich food items such as milk, curd, dairy products, etc in your diet. Make sure that your diet is enriched in sources of carbohydrates such as oats, corn flakes, etc. Protein rich food items will help you regain your energy levels in a quick way. If your baby is breastfeeding, include food items rich in minerals and vitamins. Avoid intake of fatty and oily food items as much as possible.
Fitness too plays a vital role for regaining proper health after pregnancy. Regular exercising helps in achieving proper body shape. As a new mother, you should start your exercising session only afterconsulting your doctor. Walking could be one of the best exercises for you. Certain types of Yoga postures and Pilates are especially designed for new mothers and help in gaining physical and mental health in simple and easy steps. Apart from these, one can also indulge in swimming and light aerobics a few days after birth to the baby.
Taking adequate sleep after delivery is of utmost importance for gaining good health and for recouping your lost energy.
Normally it is hard to sleep long hours as newborns require feeding and attention from time to time. One way of addressing this problem is to try to take required hours of sleep by breaking them into short naps.
Emotional Well Being
A great number of women go through emotional changes after pregnancy, commonly known as postpartum depression. It is very important that women, during and after pregnancy, keep unhappy and depressed thoughts away from their mind. Family support could be crucial during this stage to maintain emotional well-being of the woman after childbirth. A few light hobbies, book reading or simply listening to soothing music can help recover your emotional balance quickly.
